Between land and sea in Martinique. A protected treasure: the mangrove
Mélanie HERTEMAN is an ecologist. We follow her on a research trip into the mangroves, those strange, tidal forests whose roots are periodically immersed in salt water.
“The mangrove shelters a rich variety of species, as it is home to birds, fish, crabs… There’s a lot going on here. It is a very important system that must be protected and valued. (…) These three ecosystems are linked: the mangrove, the sea grass beds and, further away, the corals. These three systems cannot function independently. The mangrove protects the sea grasses from sediments. The sea grasses do the same for the finer particles, before they get to the coral, which needs clear water in order to grow.”
